Electronic Loads

An electronic load is a device which consumes electrical energy.

It is commonly used to test the source of electrical energy such as:

  • Batteries
  • Solar cells and arrays
  • Power supplies
  • Generators

It is often also used to test equipment that controls or drives electrical energy consumers, for example:

  • Led arrays
  • Motors

Electronic loads are normally programmable so that they can be set to provide a varying load over time. This is useful when simulating a non-linear load whose characteristics can often change over time. Furthermore programmable loads can be configured to adjust themselves automatically to maintain a constant current, resistance or power.

Applications

Programmable electronic loads are typically used in the production test environment when it is necessary to stress test power sources and drivers. All our electrionic loads are fitted with optional RS-232C, RS-485 and USB interfaces designed to allow the loads to be controlled by a test system. Manual control via the front panel is of course always available.

We offer two types of Electronic Load:

DC Programmable Electronic Load

This is the most common type of electronic load able to sink dc power. The load characteristics can be programmed to operate at different times facilitating a fullty functional test program.

LED Load Simulators

The LED Load Simulator is characterised to simulate a bank or array of display LEDS when testing a LED display driver subsystem.
